I Built This for Max
Losing my dog, Max, left an emptiness in my heart that's difficult to put into words. He was more than a pet — he was family.
Anyone who has lost one knows how thin that sentence is compared to what it's trying to hold.
The part nobody tells you
People are kind when a pet dies. They say the right things. But there's an unspoken clock on it — a few days, maybe a week, and then the world quietly expects you to be finished.
So the grief goes somewhere else. It goes into your camera roll at 2am. It goes into the leash you haven't put away. It goes into the habit of listening for a sound that isn't coming.
As I worked through it, I kept wishing there were a special place where I could preserve Max's story, his memories, and the love we shared. Not a place to get over him. A place to keep him.
Why a folder on your phone isn't enough
Having hundreds of photos is not the same as having their story.
A photo is a second. A story is who they were — the one noise they made when you were late. The way they claimed a specific corner of the couch as legally theirs. The thing they were afraid of that made no sense. The last good day.
Nobody else will ever know those things unless they're written down somewhere they can live. And a folder on a phone is not somewhere they can live. Phones break. Accounts close. Nobody inherits your camera roll.
They may leave our side, but they never leave our hearts.
What I built, and why it looks like the night sky
That wish became SoulePets — an online memorial created for pets who have crossed the rainbow bridge.
Every pet gets a page: their photos, their dates, their story, the small details that made them theirs. Family and friends can visit, share a memory, leave a flower, write them a letter. It gathers. Over months it becomes something you didn't have on day one — a full picture of a life, told by everyone who loved it.
And every memorial gets a star.
That part wasn't really a design decision. When you lose someone, you look up. You just do. So we built an actual galaxy — thousands of stars, each one a real place — and when you create a memorial, you claim one and it belongs to them. You can go find it. You can send someone the link and say: that one. That's him.
Max has a star. That's the whole reason any of this exists.
For everyone who has lost one
I built SoulePets in honor of Max, and for everyone who has ever lost a beloved pet. A place where their photos, their stories, and the moments that made them special can live on.
If you're in the early part of it right now — the part where the house is too quiet — I'm sorry. It doesn't fully leave. But it does change, and one of the things that helps is doing something with the love instead of only carrying it.
Write their name down. Put the photos somewhere permanent. Tell the story before it blurs, because it does blur, and that's the part that hurts later.
Because they may leave our side, but they never leave our hearts.
Who will you remember?
